The Unfinished Innovation of the Postconciliar Diocesan Synod Post-conciliar diocesan synods are very different from their predecessors. In their case, we can speak of discontinuity, even of rupture. In order to analyze their ecclesiological and pastoral novelty, the author resorts to the notion of religious innovation, following four phases: proposal, dissemination, appropriation, and adoption. It highlights the fact that the fourth and final phase of the innovation process faces several obstacles. This allows the author to open an approach that is more theological and prospective, where the ecclesiological principle of synodality emerges. The theological stake of this reflection is to identify, to characterize, and to overcome the tension between creativity and imagination, so that the Catholic Church advances with confidence and fruitfulness on the “path of synodality [which] is precisely that which God waits for the Church of the third millennium” (Pope Francis).
