- In May 2010, the autograph manuscript of Johann Ernst Hanxleden's Grammatica Grandonica, lost for several decades, was rediscovered by Toon Van Hal in the monastery of Montecompatri (Lazio, Rome), where Paulinus a Sancto Bartholomaeo (1748-1806) had once brought it (or hidden it?), after having largely plagiarised its contents to write his own Sidharubam, the first Sanskrit grammar ever printed (Rome, 1790). The present publication is the editio princeps of what is almost the oldest Western Sanskrit grammar ever composed (after that of Friedrich Roth in the mid-17th century). It includes a photographic reproduction of the manuscript accompanied by a double edition: a diplomatic one with the Sanskrit in Malayalam script, followed by an edition of the text with the Sanskrit in Roman transcription. The introduction presents the life and works of Johann Ernst Hanxleden (1681-1732), a German Jesuit missionary who also compiled two dictionaries and a grammar of Malayalam, and composed several poems in Malayalam that made him famous in Kerala under the name Arnos Padiri. As will be shown in more detail in another volume of translation and commentary of the text, this grammar follows chiefly the Siddharūpa, which was the manual traditionally used in Kerala for learning basic Sanskrit, but it also interestingly relies on Dharmakīrti’s more elaborate Rūpāvatāra (which must be the longer vyākaraṇa manuscript once copied by Hanxleden), whereas for its chapter on the gender of the nouns it agrees with what is stated in the liṅgādisaṃgraha-varga of the Amarasiṃha (3,5) (a manuscript of which was also copied by the Father).
