Abstract
Superconducting lead or tin nanowires with diameter ranging from a few tens to a few hundreds of nanometers, and a few tens of microns long, have been prepared by electrodeposition into nanoporous membranes. Their diameter is comparable or smaller than the superconducting characteristic lengths so these nanowires allow to study the superconducting properties in quasi-one dimension. We have measured the magnetic properties by SQUID magnetometry on millions of almost identical nanowires, all parallel to the magnetic field. The different magnetic behaviours of the Meissner and the vortex states were compared to the Ginzburg-Landau theory and good agreement was obtained. Moreover, our self-assembly technique allowed us to contact electrically single nanowires. The variation of their resistance as a function of temperature, applied magnetic field (parallel to their axis), and applied current or voltage was investigated. Phase-slip centers have been observed far below the critical temperature when the current is applied. These consist of periodic oscillations in time of the order parameter amplitude with periodic 2 pi phase changes. Under voltage drive measurements, we found a new S-shaped behaviour in the voltage-current characteristics near the formation region of these phase-slip centers. Using the generalized time dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, we found that this behaviour is the direct consequence of the dynamics of the superconducting condensate.
