Abstract
This contribution aims to present a selection of painted plasters unearthed both in old and new excavations carried out in several residential complexes in the south-eastern suburbs of Rome. Despite their fragmentary state, these materials, dated between the late Republic and the 2nd century AD, clearly show the exceptional quality of the wall paintings in this part of the suburbium throughout the examined period. This quality is due to the financial means of the commissioners (probably to be found in the ruling-class of the capital), who had chosen the territory at the gates of Rome as a privileged place for their luxurious residences. For the late Republican and early Imperial age, there is an evident similarity between the urban and suburban painting production; however, the comparison is more difficult for later decorations due to the limited number of remains and the peculiarity of dated contexts in situ from Rome itself. The results of this first survey suggest the potential of a census project on the mural painting evidence extended throughout the entire suburb. Such investigation would allow to shed light on the relationships between the suburb and Rome, with regard to both the way of circulation and reception of urban models, as well as the identification of specialized workshops operating in a wider geographical area.
