Abstract
This paper describes several routines and social representations related to energy, climate change, and to individual agency in different social groups of Portugal and Belgium. Empirical data is derived from qualitative and quantitative surveys conducted in different regions of Portugal and Belgium. The main part of the paper presents results on various energy-related practices and their representations (values, knowledge, etc.). Social diffusion processes are also analysed. The underlying research questions are prospective: how can these systems accommodate new ideas on energy transition presented as necessary? What are potential consequences on social cohesion? The conceptual framework of the paper rests on social theories of practice and on social theory of diffusion that are first summarised in the beginning of the paper.
