The hand is a performant prehensile and sensory tool capable of the strongest grasp and the most delicate touch. The optimal use of our hands in everyday activities depends at the same time on anatomical integrity, joint range of motion, muscle strength, cutaneous sensibility and co-ordination or dexterity. Therefore each of these domains should be explored in a hand test battery. The evaluation of hand function is of critical importance in determining the extent of functional loss in patients with traumatic injuries or destructive diseases and in assessing the outcome of various surgical and rehabilitative procedures.12,23 Advances in reconstructive surgery and hand therapy depend in part on the quality of the methods used to perform these assessments.
