Assessment of the concentration level of chemical substances in river network - Part III Weighing sampling stations in the aggregations of local monitoring data to regional statistics

The Institute of Statistics of UCL has developed during year 99, in the framework of a contract for Eurochlor, a methodology to summarise the concentration levels of chemical substances in the rivers of a region on the basis of monitoring data. The approach consists of aggregating the data observed in each sampling station to a regional statistical distribution from which any parameter of interest like a regional mean or percentile may be derived. In the aggregation of local data to regional information, the methodology requires the definition of a weight for each sampling station. This weight is aimed at expressing the importance of each station in the studied region. This paper proposes a methodology to derive such weight on the basis of hydrological and geographical information. It may be applied to any single river network from its sources to its estuary. It has the advantage to rely on very few information: the mean river flow in each sampling station and a map of the relative positions of the stations in the river network. This information allows to derive the weights through straightforward formulae.
