(en) Otãmmari architecture is characterized by the Tata Somba and more and more by a plurality of earthen habitats. These buildings are characterized by significant vulnerability to heavy seasonal rain which, without regular maintenance, threatens their durability. The application of an earthen coating on the external parts of these habitats plays a fundamental role, constituting the primary protection against extreme weather. This work, traditionally attributed to women, demonstrates both technical knowhow, through the use of various local additives (decoction of néré pods and shea butter residue), and aesthetic practice, through the decoration of the plaster (scratching ).
