Abstract
This article opens by explaining the transient behaviour of thyristors using the simple classical model of electrons and holes in a semiconductor. The requirement of specific protective circuits with thyristors are justified; these circuits, although normally not printed on the circuit diagrams are of course essential. The article finally deals with rectifier, inverter and chopper circuits. The emphasis is laid rather on particular points which are more important for the designers and the users of the circuits.
