Abstract
We consider worker learning about occupational hazards in some simple bayesian learning environments differing as firms' perceived safety expenditures are private to individual workers or akin to local public goods; cosmetic or productive, and as workers learn from others experiences at particular firms. Given endogenous worker priors, we examine, inter alia: 1) the firm-optimal relationship between priors and firms' safety levels; 2) implications of workers basing priors upon others experiences (i.e., firms' "safety records") as well as firms' perceived safety expenditures; 3) consequences of particular safety records being, in some sense, "as good as" particular levels of expenditure upon perceived safety measures. Inter alia, we show worker learning from the experience of others might be unimportant for firms and workers' qualitative behaviour in numerous environments.
