Abstract
This article reviews the literature, mainly economic, regarding the effects of workforce diversity within firms on productivity, wages and profits. Diversity is defined in terms of age, education and gender. Despite a variety of empirical approaches, most studies tend to suggest that the impact of age and gender diversity is negative for productivity, while educational or skills diversity tends to be positive. Recent studies on Belgium and France further suggest that firms in high-tech sectors are more likely to benefit from gender diversity. The outcome also appears to depend on the ownership structure of the firm, with family firms being more conducive for gender diversity.
