Abstract
A discrete-time state-feedback controller is designed via linear-quadratic optimal control theory, for an augmented system including the plant, a reference-model and models of disturbances. The Riccati equation of the optimal discrete regulator is solved through orthogonal transformations; it is shown that these have a separation property which is most valuable for systems having this particular structure. This technique is applied to the design of a dead-beat controller for a paper-making machine.
