Abstract
(en) In spite of the richness of the debates on democratic deliberation and representation, the issue of the justification of election as a process of appointment of the government has received little attention in contemporary political philosophy. This issue is yet important. A comparison with appointment by lottery affords to identify the specific virtues of elections in respect of four conditions of democratic legitimacy : the consent and the responsibility of those who are governed, the egalitarian inclusion of the citizens, the control of the decisionmakers and the contestability of their decisions, the epistemic qualities of the decisions. The conclusion of the analysis is that elections are essential to mass democracies. This is the premise on which we should try to overcome the crisis of democratic representation.
