- In 2022, the UCLouvain team started its third five-year programme on the Kephali at Sissi. The two earlier programmes had focussed on the initial exploration of the Early and Middle Bronze Age cemetery, the Neopalatial houses on the north terrace, the Late Bronze Age complex CDE on top of the hill, and the monumental Court Building on the lower southeast plateau. These earlier 10 seasons, with a team that by times counted 120 people had yielded very promising archaeological results, enough to keep us busy for study and publication during the next generation These earlier seasons have already given rise to five extensive preliminary reports, several PhDs and a score of papers, newsletters, guides and lectures. Our third 5-year programme is less ambitious: rather than revealing more buildings or tombs, we now focus on a better understanding of the remains already found by conducting tests or soundings that help us to reconstruct the archaeological history of the site and relate our phases to those of nearby settlements and especially to the palace settlement at Malia, only 3 km west of Sissi. Our team is much smaller now, just those needed for proper recording and processing. At the same time, we considerably invest in the consolidation of the archaeological remains since the local archaeological service would like the site to be open to the public as soon as possible. By the end of the third 5-year programme, we hope to have finished this emergency consolidation. In today’s brief presentation, Jan and I want to highlight some of the results of the last three campaigns at Sissi.
