Abstract
This paper aims to present Vergnaud’s (1990) Conceptual Fields Theory as a framework for both the design and analysis of didactic intervention activities. The study was conducted with students in the second year of Brazilian upper secondary education during a unit on Thermal Physics. It is part of a master’s dissertation completed by one of the authors (Carvalho Jr., 2005), in which the learning trajectories of seven students were closely examined. The findings were analyzed using conceptual and methodological tools derived from Conceptual Fields Theory. In this paper, particular emphasis is placed on the analysis and justification of the categories proposed by Vergnaud, as they were interpreted and adapted within the research design.
