- There can be no doubt that the ministry of the bishop of Rome constitutes one, if not the major, obstacle to the visible reunion of Christians. It is thus pertinent and even urgent to re-evaluate the doctrinal positions relating to this question, but also reformulate a possible ecumenical agreement. Such theological reflection is necessary, but will only be fruitful and be a source of unity if it is received in the inner life of the various Christian peoples. With this end in mind, the task of deep and persevering conversion must be brought to bear on the denominational typologies of mental morphologies which structure our differing ways of being human beings and Christians. If we do not get down to this radical anthropological level and change the unilateral aspect with each denominational ethos can have, any kind of theoretical reconciliation concerning the function of the papacy will be likely to be illusory
