Abstract
(en) About the Writing Revolution (tenth-thirteenth century). Untimely Meditations. This paper intends to focus on the « revolution of writing » that historians attempt to study since several decades. Starting with Michael Clanchy’s seminal book, the author wants to clarify some questions on the growth of writing, on a quantitative point of view, during the twelfth, the thirteenth and the fourteenth century ; this paper also stresses the problem of “functionalism”, which is pregnant for scholars studying medieval writing practices, the globalization of writing on the European scene, the growing number of literate lay people, the ambiguous relations between orality and writing. Far from answering all questions, it aims to open minds to the very complex history of writing culture.
