- Abstract
- This doctoral thesis in biblical exegesis of the Pentateuch examines the identity of the Levitical groups (Levites, sons of Levi) as it is gradually constructed within the entire corpus of the Book of Numbers and the totality of the texts on their behalf, since the Book of Numbers contains the greatest number of occurrences of the terme לוי, Levi, in the Pentateuch. Through a detailed synchronic analysis and also by incorporating historical-critical questions, the thesis attempts to demonstrate that the identity of the Levite is consistent, expressed in a textual world (as already demonstrated in recent research), and not merely defined by the relationship to the priesthood of the family of Aaron and the Israelite sanctuary. These texts reflect an attempt to integrate the Levites as a positive and distinctive function to protect and qualify the relationship between YHWH-GOD, His sanctuary, Israel as a whole and the Aaronide priesthood. Their identity is therefore not only cultic but also existential as a reflection of the religious identity of the Israelites in a particular part of their history and beyond.
