Starting from the recent Italian case law concerning platform workers and continuing through the recent legislative reform, the paper aims to contribute to the debate regarding the challenges that a platform economy places on social security systems. By describing the latest national measures taken to protect workers experiencing economic difficulties and limited access to social protection, the paper highlights the discrepancy between existing social protection schemes designed with the single, stable, full- time worker in mind and today’s modern labour market composed of an increasing number of non-standard employment contracts.
