- Self-initiated expatriates (SIEs) are known for being valuable resources and for being hard to retain. Yet, compared to employer-directed expatriates, we lack an understanding of the nature and challenges of SIE expatriate journeys. Prior studies have typically taken an organizational perspective on the evaluation of expatriation, including conceptions of success and failure. We shift emphasis by giving voice to workers themselves, and by breaking away from simplistic success-failure dichotomies. We find that SIEs construct their own references for self- evaluation. Findings have important implications for expatriate research in a world of increasing self-initiated global mobility.
