- Abstract
- "La Peinture Spirituelle", written by Louis Richeome in 1611, is at the crossroads of many different strands of Jesuit culture at the beginning of the seventeenth century. As different scholars have shown, this text makes clear references to the “second sophistic”,1 to a solid scholastic Thomist philosophy, to the art of ekphrasis, to the ars memoriae, to emblematics, and to meditative instruction (Dekoninck, Bailey, Gijsbers, Spica, Fabre). This paper focuses on the “mouth paintings” (tableaux de bouche), described at the beginning of the second chapter of the book, and on their relationship to the general approach of the Jesuits to food at the beginning of the seventeenth century.
