Abstract
The school plays a role in preparing tomorrow's citizens to participate in an increasingly digital society1. And nowadays, digital technologies are part of the media environment used by teachers in the classroom, to support students' learning (e.g. using a tablet to learn oral skills, or an interactive board to do geometry) or as a learning object in a digital media literacy course. In French-speaking Belgium, the integration of digital technologies in schools is supported by political initiatives2, but little space is explicitly given to digital media literacy. The doctoral research presented here aims to answer the following question : what are the teachers' reported representations and practices on the development of students' digital media literacy when introducing digital tools in their classroom ? To start answering this question in an exploratory way, we interviewed four primary school teachers (6-12 years old) about their practices regarding the integration of digital media in the classroom and their relationship to the development of the targeted competencies in their students. We used an inductive and comprehensive approach3 to identify the digital practices developed in the classroom, the way in which teachers talk about their digital media education practices (even outside of specific courses) and the way in which they conceive of digital media education at school. The thematic content analysis makes it possible to highlight several tensions in the discourses: tensions about the place of media education in the school curriculum, tensions about the place of the family unit in this education or tensions about the implicit or explicit dimension of the development of digital media skills.
