- (en) After acknowledging the ambiguity of the social and ecclesial status of both theology and the theologian, this article explores how the writing practices of theologians can become sources for a cultural history of theology in France at the end of the 17th century. Theologians who can be referred to as radicals are of prime interest for such an investigation, as religious radicalisms are essential to the crisis and critique of the eminently institutionalized knowledge that is theology. The theologians studied here are not only faced with the major difficulty of translating radical insights into recognizable doctrinal and theological discourse, they tend to be uncommonly eclectic in terms of writing practices, always playing with the limits and characteristics of doctrinal genres. What comes to light then is not only a transformation of the public and space of theology, but also a reconfiguration of the positions of actors in the field.
