(en) Electrochemical reactions are increasingly making significant contributions to organic synthesis both in the laboratory and on the industrial scale. These methods have the potential to lead to cheap, efficient and environmentally benign chemical synthesis. Among these electrochemical processes, anodic oxidations and in particular Kolbe dimerisation, offer a unique opportunity for initiating reactions that construct new bonds. In our work, the electrolysis of carboxylic acids was studied under both types of conditions: the Kolbe and the Hofer-Moest reactions. The first route involves a radical pathway while the second generates cationic intermediates, affording at the end, very different products. In this research, we demonstrate the potential of these well-established reactions to build new and valuable targets. By this way, we have wished to prove the synthetic interest of this electrochemical method in our current context.
