Abstract
(en) Self-discrepancies Theory and the concept of psychological (in)flexibility have been widely studied. However, to date, no studies have assessed the relationship between these concepts. This research is therefore the first study to focus on the relationship between them. In addition, particular attention was paid to the study of the discrepancies between the self-guides and their impact on depression and anxiety (the ideal self, the ought self, the undesired self and the un-ought-self). To this end, an online questionnaire was shared on social networks and collected responses from 410 participants. The questionnaire included, among other things, a modified version of the Self-Discrepancies Scale (SD-S) in order to correspond to the objectives of this study. Overall, the results show that psychological inflexibility (as measured by the AAQ-II) was a mediator of the relationship between the self-discrepancies scores of the SD-S and depression and anxiety. Psychological inflexibility was also a moderator of the effect of the self-discrepancies on the distress felt in relation to these discrepancies. In addition, among the different scores of the SD-S, distress in relation to the ideal self emerged from our analyses as the most robust predictor of depression and anxiety. In conclusion, the results of this study found that psychological inflexibility influenced the impact of self-discrepancies on perceived distress in relation to these discrepancies (moderation) and that it also explained the effect of this distress on depression and anxiety (mediation). These results are promising for treatments targeting the identity and psychological inflexibility of individuals. However, this study being cross-sectional, further research is needed to investigate the cause-and-effect relationships between these different concepts
