This article examines the European social dialogue in the light of historically existing tripartite regimes. Specifically, it considers the lines of continuity between traditional forms of tripartism and the 'soft' European social dialogue that has emerged in the previous decade, and assesses the credentials of the European social dialogue as a form of transnational tripartism.
