- Since the 1970s, the pension system in Belgium has changed with the development of mechanisms for early retirement from the labor market. This article analyzes the evolution of elderly migrations over the last 40 years. It also studies the possible impacts of early retirements from the labor market on the mobility. A first observation is the decreased mobility beyond 50 years between 1970 and 2006. A second change concerns the residential choices. If migrants move primarily to large cities and rural communities, the destinations in 2001-2006 are more diversified than it was in 1965-1970. Finally, the link between the timing of migration and timing of the departure from the labor market could be demonstrated although it would appear that the probability to migrate before the age of 65 years is lower for those leaving the market work earlier.
