Abstract
Modulation of the host immune microenvironment by infectious agents may lead to modifications of the course of concomitant diseases. In the mouse, lactate dehydrogenase-elevating virus infection prevents mesothelioma growth through IL-12-dependent IFN- γ secretion by activated NK cells. A clinical study suggested a lower frequency of past febrile infectious children diseases, and a higher frequency of bilharziasis history among Egyptian myeloma patients. Finally, TLR, and especially TLR9 ligation, protects mice against plasmacytoma and mesothelioma development. This protection is mediated by NK cells and involves more the production of IL-12 than of IFN-γ. Furthermore, Schistosoma egg antigen that suppresses cytokine secretion by NK cells abrogates also the preventive effect of TLR9 ligation. Our results indicate that the efficiency of cancer immunosurveillance may be modulated by infections.
