Abstract
(en) Under the dayly news' spotlights or at the light of the lessons to be drawn from the past, the dealer's image does not look bright at all. Indeed, history and actuality do convey, dramatically converging, gloomy views on the retail trade. These stereotypes pervade marketing and distribution management texbooks, unknown to most, authors & readers alike. Time may have come now to revise the way one formally deals with the essential, existential, question concerning all intermediaries : i.e., the rationale justifying their place within the channels or networks ; undeniably, more robust models are called for. The following paper aims at stimulating a critical review, on a tone voluntarily challenging, in the hope of adding fresh fuel to a latent controversy ... which might well generate interesting, possibly opposite, theses.
