- Abstract
- The «Gravissimum Educationis» Declaration is not the longest Second Vatican text nor is it the one which has been most commented on over the years. Yet it offers a perspective on a subject of major importance for the Church, namely the respective roles of the family and the State in education. How should we envisage Christian presence in education? This article first looks at the circumstances in which this conciliar document was prepared and adopted, then presents its key points and finally discusses its reception along with the evolution of contemporary thinking on the topic. Indeed, the issue of Christian presence in education, in order to provide a service at the very heart of our society, has raised a fundamental theological question in the past and it continues to do so today. The core question is that of the Christian mission itself, which reconciles the affirmation of an identity with an ability to interact with plurality, while opening a space for a vital civic service which holds great humanizing potential.
