Abstract
(en) This chapter is a descriptive analysis illustrating the pragmatic use of discourse markers in the different varieties of Lingala, particularly that of Kinshasa. Empirical observation reveals that DMs are eminently characteristic of orality. In the case of spoken Lingala, analysis in terms of DMs provides an efficient and enriching complement to the classical grammatical and rhetorical analysis of verbal interaction. From this point of view, in Lingala as in other language systems, discourse markers are not to be treated as an appendix to linguistic communication, but rather as strategic vectors of inference in the ethics of language conversation.
