Abstract
Mixed-use heterogeneous urban fabrics have been proven to be more resilient to changes than mono-functional homogeneous ones. More specifically, studies on high street cases have illustrated the positive role of urban forms diversity within adaptive processes. However, their particular linear condition allows only for a partial analysis of a limited numbers of morphological components.. As a complement, the paper investigates how typo-morphological diversity affects the adaptive process of urban fabrics facing contextual changes through the case of three central heterogeneous urban blocks along the canal in Brussels. These urban blocks are characterized by a high degree of typo-morphological diversity at both street, plots and building level and bysignificant changes through time at all of these levels. . A comparative morphogenetic analysis c.1866-2022reveals that, while facing similar contextual changes, the specific spatial configurations of each block have led to different morphological transformations. However, beyond the specificities of each block, the analysishighlights the recurrent role of street network diversity as the main driver of urban fabric typo-morphological diversity, both generating and protecting it. As a consequence, street layout and design must be considered as a primary issue in generating and protecting typo-morphological diversity.
