- Abstract
- A mandate issued in the name of duke Anthony of Burgundy is the starting point for this study. The original act hadn’t been identified, up to now. It is signed by the duke’s secretary John of Opstal and is dated March 31st, 1406, an important update to the incomplete 15th century transcription kept in the State Archives in Brussels. The act notifies the schout (scultetus) and justicers of Antwerp about knight John of Renesse’s homage to the duke for his land depending on the seigneury of Antwerp. This knight is most likely John v of Renesse, lord of Rhijnauwen. The texts of the original mandate and its copy, both in Dutch, are published at the end of this contribution. A reproduction of the mandate is attached to the article.
