Abstract
This three-part special lecture series, given at the invitation of the Université de Paris X (Nanterre), consisted of an introduction to the dream-tradition in Latin poetry, including its Greek antecedents, as well as its Medieval and Neo-Latin successors. It in particular introduced the usefulness of the principle of irrealism to discuss dreams in ancient literature, putting such discussions in the context of a long history of scholarship on ancient dreams focused, instead, on their prophetic, medical, or symbolic function.
