By using a recent and comprehensive household survey on the DRC, this article attempts to centralize the very scarce information written on the contemporary socio-economic situation of South Kivu. In the first part, we analyse the socio-economic performance of South Kivu in a comparative perspective, identifying it as one of the poorest provinces in the country. In the second part, we analyse South Kivu’s poverty from a spatial perspective, by focusing on the differences in consumption levels, access to commodities and human capital over the different localities surveyed. Notwithstanding the inability of the authors to contextualize the spatial diversity in poverty outcomes and their underlying dynamics, this article provides some interesting openings for further embedded in-depth research.
