- No one expected that an old pope, meant to be a "transition pope", would have taken such an initiative. This policy puzzled the various currents inside the Church at this time. This text does not try to carry out a systematic analysis but starts from a personal experience. The narrow association of the author with the Young Christian Workers (Jeunesse ouvriére chrétienne) and its training in Social sciences, enabled him to understand better which was the state of the Catholic church before the Council.
