Abstract
Industrial chimneys are common in many parts of the world and are an important asset of the industrial heritage. The methods used to analyse this type of constructions should be in agreement to their importance, namely should follow the best practices concerning the intervention on built heritage, which requires, as starting point, a detailed geometric, material and damage survey, as well as the assessment of dynamic characteristics, to properly calibrate numerical models. In this context, a masonry chimney located in the city of Porto was, first, assessed, and after simulated numerically using two different modelling approaches: i) linear elastic analysis with shell elements in SAP2000, with further non-linear analysis at the cross-section level; ii) material and geometrical nonlinear simulation with fibre elements in SeismoStruct.
