- The notion of cognitive entrenchment, introduced by R. Langacker in cognitive grammar, is now widely used in the cognitive tradition, and in particular by constructionist approaches. In addition to its strange etymology, the notion is however ambiguous, in particular when researchers try to measure it on large linguistic corpora. Within construction grammar, collostructional analysis has claimed that entrenchment is actually reflected on linguistic corpora by the degree of statistical association. In this paper, a similar theoretical assumption is made, but by means of a statistical score that allows for the analysis of more complex constructions, the cpr-score (Colson 2016), based on the average distance between the component parts of a construction. Applying this methodology to English, French, Spanish and Chinese examples makes it possible to obtain results that are quite compatible with the constructionist approaches. Indeed, associations working at morphological level appear to be of the same order of magnitude as that between very entrenched idiomatic constructions. The results not only confirm the continuum between morphology, syntax, lexicon and phraseology, but they also suggest that phraseology itself may contribute to a better understanding of the complex and probabilistic network of linguistic constructions.
