Abstract
The normalized tension deficit of frog sartorius muscles tetanized isometrically released at a constant velocity (2.56 cm/s) does not change when the interruption of the stimulation is made immediately after the release, in spite of the fact that the half-relaxation occurred then about 0.24 as earlier: the tension deficit disappears during the relaxation, that is, when the forces which stabilize the distorted shape of the stress-inhibited actin molecules are removed. These facts support the hypothesis of Maréchal and Plaghki (J. gen. Physiol.73, 453-467, 1979) that stress inhibits the cross-bridges formed by that part of the filaments which enters the overlap region during the shortening.
