Frog sartorius muscle pairs were tetanized 12s in humid nitrogen at °C, 10°C or 17°c, glycolysis being blocked with iodoacetate ((0.4 mM). From the changes in free creatine, ATP, ADP, AMP, hexose-monophosphates and fructose-1,6-diphosphate, the heat production was calculated. Over 90% of the total calculated heat is produced by phosphorylcreatine hydrolysis. The heat produced was measured with thermopile in parallel experiments and was found to be less than the calculated heat by 11 mcal/g at 0°C, 67 mcal/g at 10°C and 118 mcal/g at 17°C (n=12). This fact points to existence of chemical reactions not taken in the account of the calculated heat. According to Gilbert et al. (1971), 10 mcal/g heat might be produced by calcium exchange at the beginning of the tetanus. The origin of the remaining excess of heat is unknown.
