Abstract
The move by the rubber industry to the use of short high speed mixing cycles has created problems of compound variability. The processing safety of the final compound can vary by as much as 50% depending on the mixing energy used in the masterbatch stage of a two stage mixing cycle. In SBR tread compounds the source and type of polymer is of paramount importance in controlling the mixing energy/processing safety relationship. The effects are associated with gel formation in the SBR which can be controlled by use of efficient stabilisers such as alkyl-aryl-paraphenylene diamines either during SBR manufacture or by direct addition during internal mixing of SBR compounds.
