When liver regeneration is delayed or impaired, a dormant compartment of rescue cells is believed to be activated. After proliferation, these so called liver progenitor cells (LPCs) can differentiate towards a phenotype of hepatocytes and biliary epithelial cells (BECS), compensating for the liver cell loss. Preliminary results give rise to the hypothesis that liver progenitor cells need a support matrix such as fibrotic tissue for migration and anchor in order to differentiate towards hepatocytes, biliary cells (and possibly other cell types such as Kupffer cells and hepatic stellate cells) for restitution of the damaged liver.
