Abstract
This paper presents the results of SEM-EDS and petrographic analyses of glazed mouldmade tablewares that were produced at a turning point in the history of Athenian fine ware industry. The studied material comes from ASCSA excavations at the Athenian Agora. It spans from the invention of the black-glazed « Megarian » bowl in Athens around 225 BC to the inclusion of the local pottery industry in provincial markets of the Roman empire (1st – 2nd c. AD). This controversial period is marked by an international appeal for these fine wares, with an access to overseas markets inherited from the Classical period ; and a by dramatic blow to the pottery industry inflicted by the sack of Athens by Sulla in 86 BC, after what the city would never again be a significant producer of fine pottery.
