- Labour market entry marks a critical step in the life of any individual and can be particularly challenging for some—especially young people with low levels of education. This thesis investigates how public policies influence youth labour market integration, with a particular focus on hiring subsidies and unemployment benefits (UB). Relying on rich administrative data and microeconometric methods, it evaluates the causal impact of three Belgian labour market policies and reforms on early career trajectories. Shaping these trajectories is especially important, as they are known to have long-term effects on future employment and earnings. The thesis is structured around three chapters. Two of them assess the impact of hiring subsidies and eligibility for UB on the employment prospects of labour market entrants with low levels of education. The remaining chapter shifts the focus to university graduates and investigates how access to unemployment insurance at early career stages can affect other crucial life-course decisions—most notably the timing of leaving the parental home—with particular attention to gender differences
