Abstract
This chapter focuses on the role of companies in peacebuilding by reflecting on the HRM-SDG 16 nexus through the Colombian case. It illustrates the long-term changing role of companies in peace negotiations and the reintegration of ex-combatants. Yet, even when reintegration is identified as a key area for companies, it is faced with several practical obstacles and limits to implementation: these refer to isolated actions, limited to labor cost reduction or technical skills development, and remaining highly dependent on individual leaders’ will. However, we show the necessary commitment of companies to peace processes and the human resources practices that support them. We suggest a more “embedded approach” to violence and peace and highlight the need to further develop the concept of “conflict-sensitive HRM”. This implies that companies acknowledge their responsibility in hostile contexts.
