- (en) Role and Function of Saul’s Family in the Political Conflict Saul versus David The second part of the first book of Samuel and the beginning of the second book both relate at length the conflictual relationship between Saul, the first king of Israel, and the young David who, in fact, is to sit next on the throne. Their relationship worsens right after the victory of David over Goliath, and remained tense until the eve of Saul’s death. Even after that death, the conflict will go on between the new king and the survivors of the ousted king’s family (1 Sam 18–2 Sam 6). While David’s kinsmen are completely left in the shadow, this long narrative, on the contrary, provides a significant space for some close relatives of the first king, under his kingship. It’s specifically the case of his son and putative heir Jonathan and his daughter Michal, the appearance on the stage of the latter being preceded and prepared by the episode where her older sister, Merab, is present. This dissertation aims to examine in depth the way the narrative builds up the characters of Saul’s children from the roles and functions assigned to them in the conflict for the throne of Israel which opposes their father and David. In this regard, this study shows that the characterization of Jonathan and Michal, anchored chiefly in the dialectic tension between blood ties and heart’s, and between the familial political interest and the political and theological stakes of a community that considers itself as Adonai’s people, follows the vision and ideal of the narrator as on how the relationships between Judah and Israel are to be lived. In fact, Judah and Israel are presented as one national entity having a common destiny. From this point of view, Jonathan and Michal appear as means to the service of the ideology, in a positive way, of the narrator who, in fact, expresses himself through the characters more than he speaks about them. Thus, the study of the narrative construction of these secondary characters is another way of approaching the crossed destinies of Saul and David from an angle, which, up to the present, has been less investigated in the account consecrated to them. The exegetic literature available on Jonathan and Michal is, in general, rather interested either on one or the other. Hence, this research, which takes both of them altogether offers an original vision about the contribution of these two characters to the narrative. It allows us for the least, to expound the dynamic interplay of their respective role as the two characters are displayed on the narrative stage.
