- In this contribution we investigate the distribution of disfluencies and pause length in spoken French. The use of large speech corpora has transformed the study of pauses and disfluencies by showing how situational features (like the formal or informal character of the communicative situation, the degree of preparation, etc.) strongly impacts on speaker performance. First, we propose a model of situational features allowing us to compare speech samples from different genres. Second, we describe the distribution of pauses and disfluencies across speaking styles, as well as their co-occurrence in clusters. Third we tackle the question of the perception (vs. production) of pauses and disfluencies. Finally, we investigate the relation between the production of pauses and disfluencies and the level of cognitive load in a task, based on results of the recent study by Christodoulides (2016).
