- (en) Le Méridien de Greenwich, published in 1979 by Jean Echenoz, traces a dividing line in the French literary panorama of the second half of the twentieth century. The text announces not only Echenoz's novels, but also those of novelists who were busy starting the turning point of the 1980s in French literary history. From the beginning, Le Méridien de Greenwich initiates a metaliterary reflection about fiction. The painting on which Echenoz's novel opens is an attempt to parodically deconstruct the classic conception of character and realistic description. The analysis of the first chapter of Le Méridien de Greenwich will prove how Echenoz, with this first novel, initiates a reflection on the possibility – or even the necessity - of representation.
