Abstract
(en) Since there is a push in education for more active learning, there has been a shift from lecture-based learning to student-centered learning in higher education. Within all these changes, students no longer want to sit passively; They want more engaging courses. This thesis focuses on three student-centered instructional approaches (inquiry-based, collaborative-based and game-based) in relation to the three-dimensional construct of engagement (emotional, behavioral and cognitive) in the classroom. A mixed-methods design was used to understand the dynamics of the three-point perspective: students, teachers, a non-participant observer. The participants included 431 university students, nine teachers and one observer. The triangulation method provides convergent results and a deeper understanding of how students were engaged in student-centered instructional approaches. This thesis also highlights the importance of teacher scaffolding in guiding students toward interactive engagement along the pedagogical continuum and fostering their development as agentic learners. Future research should incorporate more measuring tools to engage students in higher education.
