- (en) This PhD dissertation gives a study of emblems (an emblem is a multimedial genre combining a verbal component and a plastic component in the same structure) designed by the students of the Brussels Jesuit College throughout the XVIIe century (1630-1685) and conceived to be exposed in public. This PhD considers the perception and the comprehension of the emblematic phenomenon by the members of the Society of Jesus, by examining the main theoretical reflections worked out by the Jesuits, and by explaining the different attempts they proposed to define and understand this genre. Furthermore, by using unpublished archives, this has allowed detailing of the how the Jesuits treated the emblems in their teaching and the pedagogical issues of this singular exercise. My interest was more specifically about the period of the regency of the Habsburg Leopold-William (1647-1656), who was extolled in the emblems, in order to question the motivations of the Jesuits and their students to choose the emblem to express a eulogy of political power and for representing it. Therefore I show how the students’ emblems differentiated themselves from the contemporary epidictic productions, not because of their contents (conventional and reflecting the political ideals of the Society of Jesus), but because of their original form. Two main heuristical ways were pursued: 1. the study of the emblematic formulation, by analysing all the discursive modes of the Jesuits’ students’ emblems; 2. the study of the emblems’ shapes the day of the display, with a detailed consideration for the organisation of the events during which the students productions were spread. This PhD leads to the edition of numerous unknown archives and to a critical edition, with the first translation, of the most important students’ emblems (around 350 emblems, in old Greek and Latin). Moreover, each chapter is provided with some core methodological principles and with hermeneutical tools aimed at making the reading and understanding of the emblems easier. This model of emblem’s interpretation and decoding sheds light on its elaboration, its aesthetic effects and its epidictic vocation, and was the major contribution of my research. This allows for interesting reflections in the field of cultural analyses regarding the uses of emblems by and for the young in training.
